What’s up doctors?

Will the real doctor please stand up? Doctors and physiotherapists are still at loggerheads over who can use the title of doctor and now it looks like the matter will end in court. While the Tamil Nadu State Medical Council (TNSMC) is preparing to file a public interest litigation petition against the use of prefix ‘Dr’ by physiotherapists they feel it will be a violation of the Medical Council of India Act. The Tamil Nadu Physiotherapists Welfare Association (TAPWA) says it will submit evidence, including videotapes, of more than 640 doctors across the state engaged in providing physiotherapy in the absence of physiotherapists.

The MCI Act states that no one other than doctors in the medical field can use the title. But several hospitals across the state list physiotherapists as doctors. Physiotherapists on the other hand have vowed to sue doctors for offering physio services without qualified training.

Meanwhile, officials in the federal health ministry said a parliamentary standing committee was exploring the possibility of upgrading physiotherapy from a paramedical discipline to an independent stream of medicine.
